Talks stall with studios on AI licencing deals

To date no major Hollywood studios have struck a licencing deal with AI companies looking to train their models. This is despite many news organisations, visual media companies and academic publishers all moving to get licencing deals in place.

Studio sources cite cost as the key reason why there are no such deals in place yet. It’s difficult for the studios to estimate the value their content will bring to the developers product, both now and in the future. It’s reported that the price for video to train AI should range from US$1 to $6 a minute.

Any deals could also potentially be short term as developers will eventually be able to train models entirely on AI generated material. And if AI developers consider that the studios are asking for too much, they may just continue to train models on content that they don’t have permission to use.
