Piracy – or the distribution of copyright-infringing screen content – has always been a major profit-generating activity that offers significant returns. A 2019 EU Intellectual Property Office study revealed that illegal Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) providers make nearly €1 billion a year supplying pirated content in Europe.
A more recent US study – “Money for Nothing: The Billion Dol-lar Pirate Subscription IPTV Business” – found that the “business” of illegal piracy subscription services has grown to a $1 billion problem in the USA alone. These services “mimic” legal streaming services making it difficult for consumers to determine that the content they are accessing is legitimate.
