600+ pirate football sites are shut down in Italy

Over 600 pirate sites illegally streaming UEFA football games have been shut down by Italian authorities.  Not only did the pirates receive criminal prosecutions, the website administrators were fined and end users who consumed the content may also face penalites of over 1,000 Euros (AUD $1,600) each.

 

The move has been well received by rights holders who stress the need to retain media sales revenue in order to re-invest in professional and grassroots development of football throughout Europe.
