Advertising on piracy web sites and apps exposes consumers to fraud and malware

Roughly one in three  piracy websites and apps carries risky advertising that exposes consumers to fraud and malware, according to new research from the Digital Citizens Alliance and White Bullet.

The report – Breaking (B)ads: How Advertiser-Supported Piracy Helps Fuel a Booming Multi-Billion Dollar Illegal Market – details a year-long investigation of the content theft business model and how it generates massive advertising revenues for criminals.

Ads for Amazon, Facebook, and Google accounted for 73% of the ads from major brands on piracy apps during that year.   But since Amazon took action, the volume of  ads on those apps has plunged by 57% this year.
