AI can both help and hinder sports piracy efforts

With live sports piracy costing the global industry $28b a year, illegal streaming is rampant. What’s more, the growth in AI is both escalating the problem and accelerating defensive capability for rightsholders.

For pirate operators, Generative AI is one such tool being used to easily create teasers and promote illegal streams on social media. And from a forensics perspective, AI can remove or manipulate watermarks making it harder to trace to the original output source.

However, for content owners and broadcasters, AI will help to combat piracy more efficiently through automation. Dealing with live sports piracy requires a fast response and AI will help to trigger and accelerate workflows automatically.
