US-based free music streaming app Trebel is successfully connecting with people who say they are not able or willing to pay to listen to music. The advertising-supported company, which has 3.2 million monthly active users and sources songs from major music labels, aims to grow via an IPO in the US.
The rise of music streaming platforms like Spotify have created the impression that music piracy is no longer a problem. In reality, illegal downloading and stream-ripping music continues to undermine the business and economic models for legitimate distribution. Trebel aims to monetise users of piracy apps and video-sharing platforms to generate revenue for artists.
