Italy’s Senate has backed a law to crack down on the broadcast of copyright-protected content on unauthorised pirate networks, with a focus on live sporting events.
The law allows Italy’s communication watchdog (AGCOM) to swiftly block traffic to pirate streaming sites within 30 minutes of an order being issued. Service providers linked in any way to accessibility of the content must comply.
The main sports rights holder DAZN recently said that illegal access to live sport was costing the industry 291 million euros (AUD $473m) each year.
