Social media giants such as Facebook are using algorithms to generate traffic which can be socially damaging, defamatory, incite violence and are disconnected from reality, according to Canadian copyright expert Hugh Stephens.
Stephens hopes legislation before the US Congress will bring more pressure to bear on the platforms to accept greater responsibility for their actions and the tools that they use to engage users.
“Hiding behind the algorithm won’t work. They need to own the problem and fix it,” he writes.
