The US non-profit Digital Citizens Alliance, along with content protection company IP House, have released a report which exposes the growing convergence between global piracy networks and organised crime.
The report, which draws on a 6-month long investigation, details how pirate networks are decentralised and operate without borders. They have clear commercial interests, generating revenue from advertising, subscriptions and piracy services.
The report outlines that a coordinated response is necessary to address the issue, including stronger cross-border enforcement, expanded legislation and greater alignment between public and private sector efforts.
