FAPAV, the Italian anti-piracy body, has published new research conducted by IPSOS which reveals a decline in the volume of piracy acts from 345 million in 2022 to 319 million in 2023. Despite the decline, piracy continues to be a serious concern for the country’s screen industry with 39% of Italian adults engaging in piracy in 2023, down from 42% in 2022.
The survey also found that while 79% understand that it’s an illicit practice, 47% are not aware of the seriousness of the issue and the impact it has on the creative labour market. IPSOS predict a loss of turnover for the Italian economy of around 2 billion euros due to piracy and a loss of 11,200 jobs.
Although not directly comparable due to different survey approaches, 21% of Australians admitted to regularly pirating according to CCA’s Australian Piracy Behaviours 2022 survey.
