PWC report: Cinema and streaming rise, but so does piracy

by Content Cafe — 20 July, 2022

Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PWC) has released the 21st edition of its Entertainment and Media Outlook which forecasts trends and revenue for the next five years.

Up to 90% of cinema patrons have returned since the pandemic, according to exhibitors cited in the report, and it’s expected that Australia’s box office will meet pre-pandemic levels by 2023.

On streaming, more than 75% of Australian households now subscribe to a streaming service, paying a total of $40 per month.

However, the report also stated that piracy is on the rise with 30% of the population accessing content unlawfully in 2021, up 15% on 2019 according to the Federal Government’s 2021 Consumer Survey on Online Copyright Infringement.
