DirectTV Go, a Brazilian IPTV service, came up with an original anti-piracy campaign to call out sports piracy by filming a 90-minute Champions League football match which was completely staged. The fake match between Manchester United and Atletico included professional players, broadcast commentary and a semi-naked pitch invader with a sign reading “No more hunting pirate links”.
The ‘illegal’ feed was promoted via search advertising to lure viewers who were then directed to the legitimate site where they could enjoy a free trial and watch the real match.
